Writing: Narrative

14: A frightening experience

Ben is a competitive individual with an iron will and is willing to jump in for his friends if they are in danger. He also can be very loud and disruptive in class frequently being sent to detention.Ben has very long hair causing people to mistake him for a female. He has tan skin with high cheek bones and is considered handsome mostly hinted by how girls act around him.He is tall for his age and has a slim build. In terms of spirit in everything he does none come close to his determination. He is a very skilled athlete and most of the sports he easily masters but academically he is below average. Ben always carries a  necklace around he uses as a bracelet that he was given to by his grandfather that recently passed away. Although Ben normally fails at his grades his skill in sports and his unbreakable spirit makes up for it.

On an incredibly sunny afternoon Ben was slowly strolling through the streets from school. He finally reached his destination but he needed to cross, unfortunately the road was busy. He decided to take a different, more cautious route.  He had just recently came from detention and the glorious sun was setting. Suddenly Ben plummeted to the ground in an instance. He picked himself up and turned to face an acquaintance from school. Ben realized that him tripping over was no accident and immediately recognized the face of the attacker. It was tyson and seemed more obnoxious than usual. Tyson is a tall young man with a muscular build,he has a tendency of disrespecting teacher's and using his peers as punching bags. He also is a talented athlete and is normally picked for sports teams. He has a steel hard grudge with Ben since he is resistant to tyson’s overwhelming strength. “What was that for!” yelled Ben with all his breath that possibly could be heard from a mile away.

Tyson slowly recovered from the suppressing blast of sound Ben emitted. Without saying a word Tyson firmly gripped onto Ben’s shoulder and pushed him over again with no hesitation.
Once again Ben came back to his feet and struck a devastating blow at tyson. “Crack” The sound of tysons jaw shattering echoed through the streets. “Aaaggghhhh!” shouted Tyson in agony. “ You’ll pay for that!”. Tyson straight after the punch occurred struck back but with less accuracy than Ben. Ben countered his fist with relative ease and pushed his whole arm back. After Tyson stuttered and was pushed away Ben sends a barrage of punches with speed too fast for the naked eye to keep track of.

Ironically Tyson dropped on the ground with a loud “thud!” and almost instantaneously got to his feet. Ben was was quite glad about being able to knock down Tyson and had a wide grin on his face that could be regarded as creepy. Tyson however was furious and his dense skin was damaged by concrete path. Tyson, blood dripping slowly from his arm onto the path charged at Ben with all his might. Ben easily dodged his futile attack and kicks him in the stomach. Tyson fell to the ground dramatically

Ben was relieved that the fight was over and calmly continued on his path. “Huff, huff, huff, huff!” Tyson breathed heavily. His arm had finally stopped bleeding and had accepted defeat. Ben peered back and shrugged his shoulders as if nothing happened and kept walking. Tyson struggled to get up to his feet but could manage. Tyson covered his wound on his arm and hurried back home. Not long after Ben had finally arrived home and saw his mother arms folded with steam coming from her ears just by trying to contain her violent fury. Ben quivering with fear slowly made his way inside.

After the fight Tyson promised that he would never bother Ben or any student since he is always terrified just by remembering that day. Ben however was punished severely by his parents after they eventually discovered why Ben delayed. From experiencing the fight both Ben and Tyson vowed never to pick fights with or rush to quick decisions easily.

Science of the arts

Aim: I want to find out which kinds of wood can burn faster or what one can last the longest.

Research: I'll find out with two different methods. One of them is to measure how long it takes for it to burn until completely incinerated by flames. The other is to see how quickly the wood is engulfed by flames. Here is a quick video explaining oak trees.
Facts About Oak

Equipment:
  • Softwood such as pine, spruce, cedar or fir.
  • Hard wood e.g: oak,hickory and maple.
  • Bunsen burner.
  • Metal plate.
  • Stop watch.

Method:
The first thing to do with this experiment is to cut the wood into 1 inch pieces. Place a metal plate with one of the blocks of wood set on it and ignite the Bunsen burner then start the timing process. Once the plates heat is equal to the woods combustion temperature the wood will soon burst into flames. Straight after that, quickly turn off the heat and note the time on your watch. Continue timing and watching until the block of wood is completely burned. Use this same process with the remaining remaining pieces of wood.

Results: This experiment was not completed since I didn't ask for permission of the tools I required. However I managed to collect a range of different types of wood that I could burn to see the span of time it took to completely burn.

Discussion: I have failed to finish my experiment since I did not ask for permission of the use of the equipment I needed. When I was collecting different kinds

FOA 2017

Today my work shop were learning how to produce art work from lino cutting. We also explained what it meant to be an artist and how to contribute in art around the world.
This is what my group came up with for what an artist is.

Day 2:We have started to create our own lino art and are learning to print them.

Day 3: We are finding out meanings of different art works and using our own meanings to create our own. Here is something I have written down to express what my art work will be.

Day 4: We are still practicing on our lino cutting and are improving at printing as well.

Day 5: We have started adding our own themes into our lino cuts and making art out of it.  We are currently learning how to transform our specific themes into lino cuts.

Day 6: I have made a lino cut from my theme which is sports. I have drawn a basketball and football surrounded by unusual auras this is how it looks like.

Day 7: I am starting to draw my theme into art and transfer it to the wood cutting.

Day 8: I am practicing more on my lino cutting and improving even more than before. I have drawn a basketball with all the things I like.

Day 9: I made a lino cut with completely random things in it like swords and a pencil and a sheet of paper.

Day 10: My lino cut is pretty much just more random things in it like most of my previous art works. I drew and cut a something that looks like either Pac man or a crescent moon and a bunch of lines.

Why New Zealand has no crocodiles

New Zealand was split from Australia before crocodiles appeared explaining why there are no crocodiles in New Zealand.

Why Nz's only native animal a bat

The reason why we only have bats as native mammal because Nz split off with Australia and they had more mammals thriving.

No evidence of wooly mammoth

There were no mammoth around due to the fact that their hairy bodies would not survive in tempratures higher than ice cold levels and would over heat. Also they were much farther up in the north than nz.

Living fossils are animals that have lived so long that they remained unchanged through geological periods.

Geological time periods

Precambrian Earliest

This was the time where  the firs single celled beings thrived and they went through extreme conditions. They later became multicelled organismed.

Cambrian 540 mya

A large amount of organisms with different shapes and sizes.
The first animals with backbones were present.
Mostly carbon dioxide in the air in this time period.

Ordovician 490 mya

There were many animals without skeletons.
Early shellfis, trlobites, nautilus, starfish and fish.
First green plants and fungi.
End of the Ice age period.

Silurian 443 mya

First advanced plants.
First Jawed fish with exoskeleton.
More shellfish.

Devonian

First ferns.
The earliest fir trees with seeds.
The first insects that were wingless.
Amphibians.
Animals from earlier period die out due to moist and cool climate.

Carboniferus 359 mya

First appearance of coal forest.
Early sharks, large trees larger than the ones we have now.
First reptiles and vertebrates.
Trilites dissapearing.
Glaciers form.
Appearance of winged insects.
Oxygen in the air.

Endangered species

Endangered species are a group of animals that are low in number.

List of endangered species

  • Maui dolphin
  • Chesterfield skink
  • Eylash seaweed
  • Mokohinau stag beetle
  • Nz fairy tern
  • Blue duck

Maui dolphin

The species will become extinct because of lack of support and be killed by predators or humans.

  1.  They became endangered because they became entangled in fishing nets and most of their deaths were caused by bruccela.
  2. Fishing nets have been banned from Maunganui Bluff to Pariokariwa Point .
  3. It has been successful in banning fishing but only 48 to 69 mature dolphins have remain.

Yellow eyed penguins

Chick can be easily killed by stoats, feral cats, ferrets and dogs.  There was an unknown disease that killed 60% of yellow eyed penguin chicks described as  diphtheritic stomatitis. The population of the penguins is 4000. There is a reserve in Long point the Catlins protecting 10% of the yellow eyed penguins.

Sperm whales

Sperm whales are endangered because of extensive hunting during the 18 to 19th century for oil and their teeth to write with scrimshaw.  They are threatened by whalers currently because they have much more able ships with better equipment that whalers used to have.
